Uncovering the cause of chapped lips is the first step to a solution. If your lips are dried, cracked, and peeling, you need help! If you suffer from the misery of chapped lips, take heart, there is help. But first, answer the 7 questions below.
Lip care begins with a bit of detective work to determine the cause.
How's the weather?
In most instances, the environment is responsible. Cold winter conditions, dry desert-like air, sun and wind can all wreak havoc. Inside, central heating and air conditioning create a dry atmosphere. Since lips have no oil glands for moisture, they are particularly sensitive.
Whats in your cupboard?
Are you allergic to your lipstick, your mouthwash, or possibly your toothpaste? Tartar control toothpastes are particularly harsh on tender lips as are some dyes in lipstick.
The use of matte lipstick often results in parched, wrinkled lips. Even the flavoring ingredients in candy or gum might cause a reaction in some people.
If you think an allergy might be the cause of your chapped lips, begin an elimination process. As a test, brush your teeth with baking soda and forgo lipstick and mouthwash. You should notice a difference within two weeks if an allergy is the culprit.
How much water are you drinking?
Dehydration equals dry, cracked lips. Have you ever taken a long plane flight only to arrive at your destination with unattractive, parched lips?
Make sure you drink 8-10 glasses of fluids daily ... preferably pure water. Exercise, hot weather, and low humidity are all signals to drink even more.
Other factors that may be the cause of chapped lips...
Bad habits?
Do you lick your lips? Saliva has enzymes that are very drying to lips. Make you lips happy and break this habit.
Do you smoke? You know it's bad for your health, but did you realize that smoking takes a toll on your lips?
Skin condition?
Skin disorders, particularly eczema, may be a cause of chapped lips. Check with your health care provider if this applies to you.
Taking medication?
Medications, particularly those for acne, often lead to lip trouble. Ask your pharmacist about possible side effects.
How's your diet?
Do you eat a balanced, healthy diet? Are you sure you're getting the proper nutrients? Dry, scaling lips may indicate a deficiency in B-complex vitamins. Vitamin E protects fatty acids and other oils. Ask your health care provider if you should take a daily multivitamin. Find more information here: Healthy Foods for Skin.
