I can relate to the misery of chapped lips! Every winter brings at least a few bouts my way. I blame the bitter climate in my part of the world. There are, however, other factors that contribute to chapped lips.
How's the weather?
In most instances, the environmentis responsible. Cold winter conditions, dry desert-like air, sun and wind can all wreak havoc.
Inside, central heating and air conditioning create a very dry atmosphere. Since lips have no oil glands for moisture, they are particularly sensitive.
What's in your bathroom cupboard?
Are you allergic to your lipstick, your mouthwash, or possibly your toothpaste? Tartar control toothpastes are particularly harsh on tender lips as are some dyes in lipstick.
The use of matte lipstick often results in parched, wrinkled lips. Even the flavoring ingredients in candy or gum might cause a reaction in some people.
If you think an allergy might be the cause of your chapped lips, begin an elimination process. As a test, brush your teeth with baking soda and forgo lipstick and mouthwash. You should notice a difference within two weeks if an allergy is the culprit.
Are you drinking enough water?
Dehydration equals dry, cracked lips. Have you ever taken a long plane flight only to arrive at your destination with unattractive, parched lips?
Make sure you drink 8-10 glasses of fluids daily ... preferably pure water. Exercise, hot weather, and low humidity are all signals to drink even more.
Are you a frequent lip-licker? Saliva has enzymes that are very drying to lips. Make you lips happy and break this habit.
Do you smoke? Yes, smoking even takes a toll on your lips!
Do you have a skin condition?
Skin disorders, particularly eczema, may be a cause of chapped lips. Check with your health care provider.
Are you taking medication?
Medications, particularly those for acne, often lead to lip woes. Ask your pharmacist about possible side effects. The final area to consider ...
Chapped lips ... a deficiency in your diet?
Could your diet be lacking the proper nutrients? Dry, scaling lips may indicate a deficiency in the B-complex vitamins. Vitamin E protects fatty acids and other oils. I take a daily multivitamin, just to be sure.
