Berry-Banana Flax Seed Smoothie

This flax seed smoothie is a tasty treat that combines powerful omega 3s with anti-aging antioxidants.

Flax seeds are one of the few vegetarian sources of Omega 3s. They are also an excellent means of adding fiber to your diet.

Don't underestimate these tiny seeds. They are powerhouses of health-giving nutrients for your body. In addition to the numerous benefits of Omega 3s, they may offer protection against hormone related cancers such as breast and prostate.

Flax Seed Smoothie

The seeds must be ground before eating. However, you can save time when making a smoothie.

Just throw flax in with the berries, fruit, and yogurt. Blast your blender on high and voilà … an easy, health-enhancing beverage.

Tasty, too!

Berry-Banana Flax Seed Smoothie

3/4 cup milk (or soy milk)
1/4 cup vanilla-flavored yogurt
1 ripe banana
1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
1 teaspoon honey (2 tsps. for extra sweetness)
1 tablespoon organic flax seeds

Mix at high speed in a blender.
(Serves 1)

Use a frozen banana or throw in a few ice cubes for an especially tempting treat on a hot day.

The great thing about smoothies is they are infinitely adaptable. Don’t have any berries? Substitute peaches or apricots. No vanilla-flavored yogurt? Use plain yogurt, 1 tsp. vanilla, and 2 tsps. of honey (my personal favorite).

Use your imagination. Create your own smoothie recipe!

Note: Because of their high fiber content, add these to your diet gradually. Start with 1-2 teaspoons and work up to 1-2 tablespoons per day. And always store flax seeds, whole or ground, in the refrigerator.
